Two Dads Team Up To Honor Kids, Fight Cancer - August 7, 2007

By Charity Apple
Times-News

Trauma links the young lives of Leigha Martinelli and Mason Lindley.
While Leigha was at Duke University Medical Center battling neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer, Mason, 3 years old at the time, was beginning his own battle with injuries he sustained in a lawn mower accident.
Their dads, Steve Martinelli and Chuck Lindley, saw each other at various Elonthon events over the years; the dance-a-thon raises money for the Duke Children’s Hospital. During these times, the men would discuss fundraising ideas. One of those was a concert to benefit neuroblastoma research.
Neuroblastoma is the most common type of cancer in infants. According to the Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Society, there are about 500 to 1,000 children diagnosed with the disease each year in the United States, and it accounts for 8 percent of all cancers but is responsible for 15 percent of deaths from childhood cancer.
Leigha, 13, is now in remission. Leigha met Mason at an Elonthon.
“She said that Mason influenced her life, inspired her,” Chuck said in a recent interview with the Times-News. Leigha, he said, gave money in memory of Mason to the Love Enough To Share program one Christmas.
Mason died May 11, 2005 at the age of 6. He lived for three years following the lawn mower accident and earned the nickname “miracle child” from doctors at Duke University Medical Center. Chuck founded the Mason Lindley Miracle Foundation, a nonprofit organization, in memory of his son.
After talking to Steve Martinelli, Chuck thought it was just natural to fund neuroblastoma cancer research in honor of Leigha.
Artists Shanna Maria and V.K. Lynne, two young artists who have become friends with the Lindleys, will perform an acoustic concert at 9:30 p.m. Friday at The Reel Café, 100 S. Front St., Wilmington. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Neuroblastoma Cancer Research Fund at Duke Children’s Hospital.
If folks here can’t make the trip to Wilmington, Chuck said they can still donate money to the research fund. Checks should be made payable to DUMC Account No. 3915208 Neuroblastoma and can be mailed to Neuroblastoma Research Fund, DUMC 3828, Durham, N.C. 27710.

Proceeds to benefit Duke Children's Miracle Network for Neuroblastoma cancer research

Miracle Families Uniting for Neuroblastoma Cancer Research - April 29, 2007

Neuroblastoma is by far the most common type of cancer in infants and the fourth most common type of cancer in children. The Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Society states that there are approximately 500 to 1,000 children diagnosed with this disease each year in the United States. Although it accounts for only 8% of all cancers, it is responsible for over 15% of deaths in childhood cancer.

Currently, there is a Neuroblastoma Research Fund at Duke Children’s Hospital with a new treatment, but no funds. Pediatrician, Dr. Timothy A. Driscoll, is the principle investigator leading the way for this new research. He also happens to be the physician for another inspiring miracle. Her name is Leigha Martinelli, of Burlington, N.C. She was 8 years old when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. After two and a half years in the hospital, Leigha is presently in remission with a dormant tumor in her right femur. This is where the wonderful twist begins that unites the Mason Lindley Miracle Foundation to this cause. The familes of Mason and Leigha constantly crossed paths at Duke usually just missing one another during frequent admissions and discharges. Each family was inspired by the other’s story and courage despite seemingly hopeless circumstances; yet both kids overcame the odds to recover and inspire countless lives and each other. That part just does not seem to end for either even in spite of Mason’s absence. Thus, the Miracle Foundation is actively involved in advocating, promoting and supporting the focus of this study for both Leigha and countless other children and families.

This new study treatment, an “MABG” treatment, would travel to the tumor and kill cells only in that area. It is a more localized form of treatment that will result in a lesser dose of radiation and toxic side effects. This is unlike the “MIBG” treatment that Leigha has already endured and is no longer a treatment option.

This cancer research needs to be done immediately for those facing diminishing hope with each passing day. This research will not only help children faced with this terrible cancer, but will also help with adult cancers and brain cancer . The FDA requires that two studies be done before the treatments can be approved. The cost to get these studies off the ground is $220,000. All donations are sent directly to the research fund. The goal is for 440 groups or individuals to each raise $500.00; however, a donation of any amount will be greatly appreciated. For a donation of $500.00 or more, you will receive a “440 Neuroblastoma Research” t-shirt with scripture.

Please make all checks payable to:
DUMC Account No. 3915208 Neuroblastoma
and you can mail them to:
Neuroblastoma Research Fund
DUMC 3828
Durham, NC 27710

Please remember to include the account number on all of your checks so that the funds are deposited appropriately. Also, write Neuroblastoma Research in the “for “portion of your check .It is imperative to get this research up and running as soon as possible and it cannot be done without your help and support. If you can’t help financially; but know someone who can; please help out by passing this on to them and praying for the many children who need this help. Again please remember; any donation will be graciously accepted.

Rock Artist, Danny Vaughn, has posted his personal comments on the track,"Miracle Days", included on his forthcoming album Traveller to be released on February 16, 2007. Don t miss it! - February 14, 2007

"Miracle Days" - A couple of years ago I received a letter from a gentleman named Chuck Lindley telling me about a terrible accident that had happened to his son, Mason. Initially, his doctors had given him almost no chance of survival, yet, as time went on, he miraculously soldiered on through numerous operations and reconstructions. Mason had become a symbol and an inspiration to everyone he came in contact with, bearing it all with grace and laughter that only kids are capable of. A true warrior. Chuck went on to tell me that he dearly wanted to express to his son, in song, how much he loved him and, even more amazingly, that he wanted me to be the song writer to do it. Chuck had felt an affinity with me through songs I have written in the past. I launched into it right away and had the initial concept down pretty quickly. But I couldn't make it what I wanted it to be. As time went on, and life s usual troubles got in the way, I fell further and further away from finishing the song. It took two years for me to find the strength of voice to make the music and the words all fit together. Sadly, Mason has since passed on and will never get to hear it. His parents, Chuck and Tracey, have been very kind to still listen to it and give it their approval.

The song itself is a culmination of ideas that I have been coming to for years, I think. From a production standpoint there were so many parts that were involved to make it the finished, lavish sounding piece that it is.
The miracle I refer to in the lyrics isn't just one miracle, it s all of them together. The complete unlikelihood of our being here at all, and the miracle of what love and compassion can accomplish in this world. One person at a time.

Rock Artist Danny Vaughn to Feature Song Written in Celebration of Mason Lindley as Leadoff Track on New Album Titled "Traveller" Due Out Feb 16th, 2007 - February 2, 2007

Rock United.com:"Miracle Days" is the name of one track at "Traveller". The story behind this song is very touching. Some of our readers might be familiar with it, but for those who aren't, can you tell it in a few words? Did you ever find the family that contacted you?

Danny: This song was inspired by the courage and fighting spirit of the Lindley family, Mason, Chuck, and Tracey. A couple of years back Chuck Lindley contacted me and told me a truly terrible story about an horrific accident that his son, Mason had that left him fighting for his life and undergoing a gruelling series of surgeries that would have left most of us unable to go on. But Mason did and inspired everyone around him for a few years before the seriousness of his injuries finally took him. Chuck told me that he wanted to write a song for his son to let him know how dearly he loved him and he felt that I was the writer to do it. I was extremely moved and flattered and tried my hardest at the time to come up with something I thought was worthy of their family. But, I was going through a really bad period in my own life and nothing I wrote satisfied me. It got left undone, I'm ashamed to say. Then, not too long ago, everything clicked. And the song "Miracle Days" was born. Although Mason is no longer with is, his parents have heard it and given me the thumbs up on it, so it will be the opening song on the album. Also, the Lindley family has gone on to found "N Rock United". Please, if youre interested in their story, let them tell it to you. Go to their site(N Rock United)
and see all of the cool things they are doing for their cause.
